The importance of asking questions?

Why do we need to ask questions?

Types of Questions

Our questions of ourselves can be of the following two types:

    · Empowering. How can I improve this situation? This will lead our mind to search for different possibilities as to how to enhance the current position. The outcome will generally be responsible affirmative action; or

    · Dis-empowering. Why does this always happen to me? Leads to the endless loop of despair and most likely in-action. Unfortunately this leads to people blaming others for their situation and no marked improvements are made.

Some people practice the art of meditation to get their own answers from within.

Quotation:

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

Sir Winston Churchill

Questions are part of the Communication Process

Questioning others will result in obtaining information about how they feel or see a particular situation. Questions form a key component of the communication process.

Some believe that the person asking the questions controls the conversation. It allows them to obtain information of the other party and thus plan their strategy to obtain their desired result whilst meeting the majority of the other parties needs.

In asking a question, you have to be prepared to listen to the response from the other party. Totally listening to their response will amaze you. When someone knows that the other person is listening they will disclose much more about themselves and the situation being discussed. This desire to be heard is one of the basic human needs.

Sample positive questions to ask yourself are:

· What if ………………?
· How can I ……………….?
· What has worked well today?
· What could I do better next time?
· Are there other options available?

Asking questions enters into every aspect of our life. The answers will guide and focus your future direction. It works effectively in the business world and our personal lives.

 Quotation:

"There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other."

Douglas Everett
